Yes, we really think we possibly have the best wood BBQ Grill in the world...ever! Our Vulcanus range has us shouting from the rooftops. Our team comprises foodies with a passion for outdoor cooking. It is not about the hype; it is not about the gadgets (although we admit - we love a good gadget or multi-tool).
The reasons behind our passion for outdoor cooking vary. It definitely changes the way you look at a BBQ or BBQ grill. Do you need it to be portable? Is the type of fuel you use important to you? Do you want a BBQ that lasts or is easy to set up and clean, or is storing one too much of a hassle and does it stay outside, unsheltered?
Before we explore the various reasons that support this statement, let's deal with the basic question first.
The short answer is a simple yes. Barbequing and grilling are two very different ways of cooking. The confusing part is this: grilling is the act of cooking something hot and fast without smoke and lid and over high heat. To barbeque means roasting or broiling food on a rack or revolving spit in a container (or closed environment).
So here is the confusing bit - to cook outdoors, you often use a BBQ! You can both barbeque and grill on a modern BBQ. Gas BBQs or charcoal barbeques often have a lid, so you can cook your food slowly over a period.
Simply put, barbecuing and grilling are two different cooking methods used on a BBQ. There is a vast range of BBQs on the market, with the main differentiators being size, fuel, accessories, ease of use, and lifespan. We like the fire pit BBQ grill combination.
No really, why do you want to buy a BBQ? For example, is it because you are cooking outdoors often? In that case, you probably don’t want to spend a long time getting a fire going–maybe gas is the better option for you. The number of people you cook for outdoors regularly will dictate the size of the BBQ itself.
If you are fond of outdoor adventures and camping, you will need a portable BBQ. If this is the case, the Vulcanus range is not for you. Our Solo Stove Grill or the Valiant foldable BBQ are better suited.
Foodies will give the choice of fuel for the BBQ a lot of thought. If you love the char-grilled taste, a charcoal BBQ is the way to go. Getting it fired up takes a while, but let’s face it, it is part of the fun. Especially if you don’t do it often and it is part of the reason to have a garden party.
Then there are the foodies that love grilling, have a passion for a good fire to gather around, and spend an afternoon and evening eating, relaxing, and making the night last as long as possible. These foodies know that there is nothing like the natural flavouring of wood smoke on your food.
Nothing as complex as smoking food, but the simple flavouring achieved when grilling food above or near a wood fire. The wood selected with care can not only add to the flavours of your meal but will also add an ambience to the event that is exciting, relaxing and fun. This brings us to, in our opinion, the best BBQ Grill ever!
With any BBQ, always consider the cleaning and storage aspects. Is it easy to clean after use? What maintenance is required to keep it rust-free? How easy is it to move and store for re-use? Ask yourself if you are disciplined enough to clean the whole BBQ after its use. How much time are you willing to spend on cleaning, storing and set-up? Is a permanent BBQ area or an outdoor kitchen possible?
Yes, and we are deadly serious about this. We really think it is that good! The Vulcanus is a nice focal point in the garden. Its square shape is unusual and eye-catching.
The contemporary design in Corten steel makes it easily fit in any garden design. The rusty-brown Corten steel ages beautifully over time and actually protects the BBQ from damaging rust.
The square BBQ grill is unusual but very practical. It gives you an optimal size grilling surface with zones of varying heat for easy grilling. Move food from the extremely hot edges by the fire outwards or in the corner for lower heat and slower cooking. The fire pit in the centre is not just a fire pit. The fire pit for the wood is not only easily accessible, but it also has a ceramic lining. This fire pit bbq grill combination with a ceramic centre sets it apart from others.
The ceramic lining of the Vulcanus pit is key to a stable, easy to maintain temperature for the grilling surface. Likewise, getting a fire started in this pit is easy. Simply build a Jenga construction of kindling first, with fire starters on top, framed by kiln-dried wood.
The fire will start instantly. Because of the ceramic lining, the wood burns hotter, longer and more efficiently, leaving little ash. The comfortable heat radiating from the Vulcanus makes you cosy up around the fire.
Give the Vulcanus time to heat the ceramic and grill surface. It takes 45 minutes to achieve the perfect cooking temperature. The corners are ‘cold zones’ so you can move cooked food there, so it stays warm but does not burn.
The little groove on the edge of the grilling surface drains excess fats, juices and oils so that it does not run into other foods on the grill. In addition, as the square BBQ surface is accessible from all sides, it is easy for everyone to get involved with the cook. Grill, bake, fry and roast to your heart’s content.
Like with all good things, the Vulcanus gets better each time you use it. However, in this case, the more seasoned the grill plate is, the better it cooks and the better the food tastes. For the more adventurous cooks, add the multi-grid for cooking tasty paella and mind-blowing stir-fries.
The Vulcanus comes in 2 sizes (73cm and 91cm diameter) and three variations. As a fire pit BBQ grill, the Campus is perfect for cooking while sitting down. The taller Chef is easy to stand around and then there is the MasterChef. The MasterChef has a cooking and preparation area attached to the BBQ grill.
The Corten steel construction is built to last and you simply leave it outside throughout all seasons. Consequently, there is no need to move it, the weight will easily withstand heavy winds. A simple cover protects the cooking surface. If you clean after every use by simply wiping the cooking surface and emptying the ashtray, the Vulcanus will be ready to use the next time you lift the cover.
What is not to love?!
